The Child Protection Support Service for Schools was established as a regional service in April 2006. It is jointly managed and funded by the Department for Education (DE) and the five ELBs. Currently the CPSSS is based within the Education Welfare Service and presently falls under the managerial responsibility of the Chief Education Welfare Officer (CEWO) in each board area.There are 3 Designated Officers for Child Protection in each ELB CPSSS.
Every school must have a Designated and Deputy Designated Teacher for Child Protection (DT and DDT), trained by the Child Protection Support Service for Schools. Nursery units within primary schools should also have a separate Deputy Designated Teacher for Child Protection.
