The Peripatetic Support Service is an amalgamation of teachers of the sensory impaired and teachers of children with specific learning difficulties.

  • The Peripatetic Support Service for pupils with a visual impairment supports children in the Belfast Education and Library Board with a range of visual needs. The teachers within this service are qualified teachers with additional qualifications for teaching pupils with a visual impairment.
  • Support is given to children with a visual impairment from the ages of 0-19. Children of preschool age are visited in their home, crèche or playgroup. School age children are visited in their mainstream school.
  • The Peripatetic Support Service for the hearing impaired provides teaching or support for children from birth to 19 years within the Belfast Education and Library Board’s area. Support and advice is also provided for parents.
  • The staff within this service are qualified, experienced teachers. They have additional qualifications in the teaching of hearing impaired children.
  • The Peripatetic Support Service for pupils with specific learning difficulties (SpLD/Dyslexia) provides additional tuition for children who have been identified as having specific learning difficulties in literacy by the BELB Educational Psychology Service. The teachers within the service have additional qualifications within the area of special needs.
  • In addition we operate a Literacy Resource Centre based in Fortwilliam. Two senior peripatetic teachers are available to give advice to teachers and parents and offer a wide range of literacy materials for inspection. Opening times - Tuesday and Thursday 2:00 - 4:00 pm

Support for SENCOs and teachers is organised in cluster groups for teachers requiring help in specific areas.
